Jesus said "when you pray". Jesus did not suggest that we pray. Prayer was never meant to be an option for those who follow Christ. Prayer is a MUST!
See Luke 11:2

Jesus teaches tells us not to pray empty vain and repetitious prayers to be seen and to gain the approval of men. Instead, pray intimate and earnest prayers to your Father in Heaven.
See Matthew 6:5-6

The LORD our God is Holy. While Hebrews 4:16 tells us to "come boldly unto the throne of grace", both James 4:10 and Micah 6:8 insist that we walk with the Lord in humility. Give Him the honor that only He deserves.
Jesus instructs us to pray LIKE this, not to repeat these words exactly. The LORDS Prayer is a model of prayer that consists of these key parts; adoration, supplication, intercession, thanksgiving and praise.
See Matthew 6:9-13

Agreeing with another in prayer serves as added strength. "Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven."
-Matthew 18:19 KJV
See also Deuteronomy 32:30.
When we pray, it's not unusual that distractions come. If you lose focus, start again. It may take time to learn this discipline but God will honor your persistence.
See Luke 18:1-8 and ! Thessalonians 5:17
